# SecondFi Asset Recovery FAQ

## The basics
### What is the SecondFi recovery process?
The SecondFi recovery process is the official process for users whose wallets were affected by the June 2026 security incident.
It allows you to verify control of an affected wallet, review any assets that are eligible for recovery, choose a new Cardano wallet you control as the destination, and submit a recovery request.

Recovery is separate from wallet migration:
* Wallet migration moves supported assets that remain in a wallet to a new wallet.
* Recovery concerns eligible assets affected by the security incident.

### Do I need to have contacted support before I start?
No. You do not need to have contacted support or obtained any a prior reference number to start.
Go directly to [secondfi.io](https://secondfi.io/) in a web browser and start the recovery process there. Submitting a recovery request through the official tool begins the recovery process for the affected wallet.

### Where is the official recovery tool?
The official recovery tool is available only through [secondfi.io](https://secondfi.io/).

For your safety:
* Type [secondfi.io](http://secondfi.io) directly into your browser rather than following a link from an email, advertisement, direct message, or search result.
* Check that the address bar shows exactly [secondfi.io](http://secondfi.io) before you begin.
* Do not install a browser extension or download an application claiming to be required for recovery.
* SecondFi will not contact you first to ask you to begin recovery.

### Is the asset recovery tool open to all affected wallets from day 1?
Yes. Once you have submitted a Recovery Request, we aim to process it within five working days.

## Before you start
### What do I need to prepare?
Before starting, have the following ready:
1. The recovery phrase for the affected wallet. The tool supports 12-, 15-, and 24-word recovery phrases.
2. A newly created Cardano wallet that you control, from a provider of your choice, and its receiving address. A hardware wallet can provide an additional layer of security because it keeps private keys offline.
3. A private, trusted computer and a current web browser. Do not use a public or shared computer.
4. A reliable internet connection. Recovery proof generation is resource-intensive. We recommend at least 2 GB of available memory, a computer with a processor no more than five years old, and an internet connection of at least 50 Mbps.
The recovery tool is browser-based. It is not completed through the SecondFi app.

### Do I need a new destination wallet?
Yes. You must create a new Cardano wallet that you control before submitting a recovery request.
Do not use:
* the affected wallet;
* an exchange deposit address;
* an address you do not control; or
* an address that is sanctioned or otherwise blocked by the recovery tool.
A hardware wallet can provide an additional layer of security because it keeps private keys offline. SecondFi does not endorse any particular wallet provider; choose a provider that is appropriate for you. You may refer to [cardano.org/wallets/](https://cardano.org/wallets/).

### Can I use an exchange deposit address as my destination?
No. Do not use an exchange deposit address.
Exchange deposit addresses may not support all Cardano assets and may lead to delays, loss of access, or permanent loss of assets. Enter only the address of a new Cardano wallet that you independently created and control.

### What happens if I no longer have my recovery phrase?
The recovery phrase is required to complete recovery. There is no alternative verification method in the recovery tool.
SecondFi cannot retrieve, reset, or replace a recovery phrase. Do not share your phrase with anyone who offers to recover it for you.

## How recovery works
### What are the steps in the recovery process?
Recovery is one continuous process:
1. Read and accept the Recovery Terms. You must review the full Asset Recovery Process Terms & Conditions and accept them before you can continue.
2. Verify your affected wallet. Enter the recovery phrase for one affected wallet. A zero-knowledge proof is generated on your device to verify control of the wallet.
3. Review what is eligible. The tool checks the addresses associated with that wallet against the incident records and displays any assets that are eligible for recovery.
4. Enter your destination address. Provide the receiving address of your new Cardano wallet and complete the required confirmations.
5. Generate the proof and submit. The tool creates the proof for each eligible affected address and submits the recovery request.

You complete recovery of one wallet at a time. If you have more than one affected wallet, repeat the process for each wallet.

### Why does the recovery tool ask for my recovery phrase?
Your recovery phrase is used to generate a zero-knowledge proof that verifies you control the affected wallet. This enables the recovery request to be linked to the new destination wallet in a manner designed not to disclose the wallet credentials to SecondFi.
In the official recovery flow at [secondfi.io](http://secondfi.io), your phrase is used locally in your browser to generate the proof. It is designed to be processed locally and not stored or transmitted; only the proof is submitted with your recovery request.

### Will SecondFi support or staff ever ask me for my recovery phrase?
No. SecondFi will never ask you to share it. You alone should enter your recovery phrase, and only in the official recovery flow after you have independently confirmed that your browser is at [secondfi.io](http://secondfi.io).

SecondFi support, staff, partners, or community members will never ask you to provide your recovery phrase through email, direct message, chat, telephone, screen sharing, or any website other than the official recovery flow.

Before entering your phrase:
* Make sure nobody can see your screen;
* Stop any screen sharing or screen recording;
* Use a private, trusted computer; and
* Confirm the official domain in your address bar.

### How does SecondFi determine what I can recover?
The recovery tool checks each address in your wallet against SecondFi's incident records and the relevant incident snapshot.
The review screen shows:
* Affected addresses with assets available for recovery;
* Affected addresses for which a request has already been submitted or completed; and
* Affected addresses with nothing eligible to recover.
Only assets determined to be eligible and available for recovery are shown. The tool may display an Estimated Total Recoverable amount and a breakdown by address.

### Why are the assets shown as an estimate?
Assets are assessed against the incident snapshot and reflect assets SecondFi is able to make available through the recovery process. The final number of assets may differ from the estimate displayed in the tool.

Assets that are not shown are not included in that recovery request. The assets recovered may be less than the assets originally lost, and the estimate is not a commitment. Review the applicable Recovery Terms carefully before continuing.

### What happens to NFTs that cannot be returned?
Some NFTs may not be available for return in kind. For each eligible NFT or an admission of liability, that cannot be returned directly, 30 ADA will be included in the ADA amount shown for the relevant affected address.

This is a fixed, standard amount. It is not an individual valuation of the NFT and does not reflect its rarity, market price, or other characteristics. There is no per-wallet cap for this standard amount, subject to eligibility under the Recovery Terms.

Where an eligible NFT has been secured for return, it may be returned through the recovery process rather than being represented by the standard ADA amount.

### What if my wallet is affected but no eligible assets are displayed?
The tool may identify an affected wallet or address with no assets currently eligible for recovery. In that case, it will show that there is nothing to recover for that address or wallet.
If you believe the result is incorrect, contact SecondFi through the official support channel at [kb.secondfi.io/en/](https://kb.secondfi.io/en/). Support cannot override the recovery tool, confirm an outcome in advance, or recover a recovery phrase.

## Your destination wallet
### What type of destination address can I use?
Use the receiving address of a new Cardano wallet that you control. A Cardano address normally begins with addr1.

The tool will reject addresses that are not valid Cardano addresses and addresses linked to the incident. It cannot independently prove that you control the address or determine whether it is an exchange address, so you must check this carefully yourself.

### Can I change the destination address after I submit my request?
No. The destination address is bound into the proof used for the recovery request. Check every character carefully before you continue.
Blockchain transfers cannot be reversed. If you provide an incorrect address, an exchange deposit address, a sanctioned or blocked address, or a wallet you do not control, assets may be lost and may not be recoverable.

### Does SecondFi charge a recovery fee?
No. The recovery tool will never ask you to send funds or pay a fee to recover eligible assets.
Anyone who asks you to pay a fee, send ADA or another asset, sign a transaction, or transfer assets to an address they provide is attempting to defraud you.

## Proof generation, submission, and timing
### How long does proof generation take?
Proof generation can take up to approximately 15 minutes. The time depends on your computer, internet connection, available memory, and the number of affected addresses being processed.

Once proof generation begins:
* Keep the browser window open;
* Do not leave or refresh the page;
* Do not start screen sharing or recording; and
* Close other resource-intensive applications or browser tabs if your computer is slow.

### What if the proof generation process is interrupted?
If your connection drops, your browser runs out of memory, or another error occurs, proof generation will stop and the tool will display a retry option.
Follow the instructions shown in the tool and try again once the issue has been resolved. Do not enter your recovery phrase into another website or accept help from anyone who asks to access your device or credentials.

### When will my recovered assets arrive?
Once a recovery request has been validated and submitted, allow up to five working days for it to be processed.
Assets are sent to your destination address once your request has been processed. SecondFi may pause, suspend, or change the recovery tool or process, for example for security or technical reasons, and will post updates through official SecondFi channels. You do not need to take any further action after submission unless the tool or official SecondFi channels tell you otherwise.

### How do I know my recovery request was submitted?
At the end of the process, the tool will confirm that recovery requests have been submitted for the eligible affected addresses in that wallet.
You can also use the recovery status checker at [secondfi.io](http://secondfi.io) at any time after submission.

### How do I check my recovery status?
Use the status checker on [secondfi.io](http://secondfi.io) and enter the new destination Cardano address that you provided in your recovery request.
Do not enter the affected-wallet address to check your status. The status checker will show the recovery requests associated with the destination address, such as:
* Submitted — the request has been received and is being processed; or
* Completed — the assets have been sent to the destination address. A transaction link may be shown when available.
Recently submitted requests may take a short time to appear. If no request is found, check the destination address carefully and try again later.

### Is the recovery status checker private?
The status checker works by destination address. Anyone who knows that address may be able to view the recovery status associated with it.
Do not share your destination address unnecessarily, and never share your recovery phrase.

## Staying safe
### Can I use my affected wallet after I submit a recovery request?
No. Do not send funds to, use, or reuse an affected wallet in any application or service.
Keep your original wallet information and recovery phrase secure. Recovery does not make the affected wallet safe to use again.

### My browser or security extension shows a warning or a blank screen. Does that mean the tool is unsafe?
Not by itself. Because the recovery tool uses your existing recovery phrase to prove ownership of your wallet, some anti-phishing tools, anti-scam tools and browser extensions may show a warning, or display a blank screen, when you open the tool or enter your recovery phrase.

Always check that you are on the exact official domain, https://secondfi.io, with HTTPS and no extra words, characters or lookalike spellings. Type the address yourself rather than following a link sent by direct message, email, advertisement or any other third party.

### What should I do if someone offers to help me recover my assets?
Do not give them access to your device, screen, wallet, recovery phrase, private keys, passwords, or destination address.
SecondFi will not:
* Send an unsolicited message asking you to begin recovery;
* Ask you to send assets or pay a fee;
* Provide a destination address for you to use;
* Ask for your recovery phrase outside the self-completed official recovery flow at [secondfi.io](http://secondfi.io); or
* Ask you to install a new recovery application or browser extension.

If you need help understanding the process, use [kb.secondfi.io/en/](https://kb.secondfi.io/en/). Do not rely on private messages, advertisements, or third-party websites.
